With the guidance of Baz Luhrmann, the director of the previous film showing last 2001, the ongoing musical is a Broadway version of the said original. Revolving around Christian and Satine and their forbidden affair, the plot is presented with a visually stunning stage fit for its late 1900s time period, while expanding its musical score to not only include the classic songs loved by many from the original film, but also new arrangements of current pop songs that were not accessible when the original picture was released.

Since its premiere in Broadway at the Al Hirschfeld Theatre in half a decade ago up to its present run in Majestic Theatre, Moulin Rouge! The Musical has been one of the top shows traveled to by old and new theatre fans. The show, being an adaptation of a successful film, charms a wide diversity of fans and has solidified its position in Broadway success.
The Broadway play shares the journey of Christian, a driven American writer who travels to Paris not knowing what is in store for him, who then bumps into and subsequently becomes infatuated with the famous performer Satine of the Moulin Rouge nightclub, one of the most lively and fantastic entertainment venues in Montmartre at the turn of the 20th century. Their relationship however is not meant to be easy, as the two begin to encounter a string of trials, including the temper of one of Moulin Rouge’s longtime benefactors, the duke of Monroth who wishes Satine for himself and bars Christian from pursuing Satine romantically.
The characters of Christian and Satine were introduced by Tony Award winner Aaron Tveit (for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical), and Tony Award Nominee Karen Olivo (for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical) respectively. They were accompanied by a star-studded and equally-awarded cast including Danny Burstein (Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical), and Tony Award Nominee Sahr Ngaujah (Best Performance by an Actor in a Featured Role in a Musical) undoubtedly leading to the musical's success. Behind the curtain, Tony winners such as Alex Timbers (Best Direction of a Musical), Sonya Tayeh (Best Choreography), and Justin Levine with Katie Kresek, Charlie Rosen, and Matt Stine (Best Orchestrations) create an second to none show.
This coming May’s production of Moulin Rouge! The Musical is to be staged at Majestic Theatre in San Antonio.
