Four decades ago, history was being made when Alain Boubil, Jean-Marc Natel, and Claude-Michel Schönberg created the original musical script for Les Misérables (previously in French). Based on Victor Hugo’s late novel of the identical title, the plot of Les Mis was adapted and turned into a live stage adaptation as a fully lyricized play, which was a unique approach to stagecraft in that era.

After a very short run in Paris, there was evidently a growing demand to create a more accessible version, and when Cameron Macikintosh heard the soundtrack, he was so inspired and announced he was going to create an English version while working with the Royal Shakespeare Company and Herbert Kretzmer, who invented the new song numbers. The English version of Les Misérables at first performed with a two-month period at the Barbican Centre, but due to its impressive success and repeatedly sold-out shows, it rapidly relocated to West End’s Palace Theatre in just two months, a more bustling and premier venue, and ran for 19 years. The musical then transferred once more to another location, the Queen’s Theatre (which was eventually refurbished and renamed to The Sondheim Theatre in 2019), and maintains its shows up until today. Counting all its productions since its inception all those years ago, Les Misérables is statistically the longest-running stage play so far in this generation.

With 37 years in London solely and not even enumerating its shows in international countries, especially its well-received Broadway seasons, it is incontrovertible that this global hit continues to be amazing in the eyes of the show's attendees. The plot and the epic musical score, which revolves around redemption, sacrifice, and selfless love, always brings each viewer to tears due to the apparent emotion behind each song and act performed. Les Mis has become so critically-acclaimed that the show has been converted to films numerous times and received very positively even on a separate platform.

This coming January’s run of Les Mis brings it to Texas, where the show will be hosted on Wednesday 29th January 2025, in Majestic Theatre, San Antonio. For a sung-through musical like Les Misérables, locals can agree that Majestic Theatre is the premier option due to its audio engineering and acoustics, in addition to a grand constructed stage to host the musical.
