Majestic Theatre Information

Majestic Theatre

Majestic Theater is an ideal location for theater, dance, concerts, and comedy shows. Not only that, but the theater also currently hosts the Broadway in San Antonio series where you can watch Broadway musicals in a different setting.

Sitting in the heart of San Antonio, on East Houston Street, the Majestic boasts stunning views across the city and is at the epicentre of culture. The theater seats up to 2,264 people. However, if you are renting the space, there are opportunities to increase capacity by utilising the theater’s stage or lobby.

Designed to create an atmospheric undertone and transport its attendees to more exotic destinations, the theater boasts Mission Revival architecture and is not made up of the traditional seating structure. It displays a more asymmetrical construction. The ceiling is also painted to reflect a sky and clouds, so theatergoers can experience a taste of drama before and after the show.

In the 1980s and 90s, the City of San Antonio, local philanthropies, and a non-profit organization called Las Casas Foundation raised funds to turn the theater into a modern performing arts facility. A $9 million renovation took place to restore the theater, expanding the stage and structure.

The history of Majestic Theater

First opening its doors on 14th June 1929, the Majestic was the second-largest auditorium in the United States, comprising 3,703 seats across the main floor – where the orchestra resides – and two balconies. It’s reported that there were over 4,000 seats at the time of opening.

Although the Majestic entertained flocks of theatergoers for decades, the theater closed its doors in 1974, thankfully reopening again in 1981 after years of remodeling. In 1988, the venue closed again after being purchased by the City of San Antonio. The Las Casas Foundation was formed with the idea of restoring the Majestic to as close to its original design and architecture as possible. In the fall of 1989, the Majestic re-opened again with ‘Majestic Week.’

‘Majestic Week’ saw symphony and gala performances, featuring stars like Johnny Mathis, Don Galvan and Rosemary Clooney – all of whom took part in the theater’s original 1929 opening celebrations.

Other legendary artists to have graced the stage of the Majestic include Mickey Rooney, Anne Miller, Bobe Hope, Jack Benny and George Burns. There have also been several movie premieres hosted there, such as The Texans, The Lusty Men, To Hell and Back and 2004’s The Alamo.

As for events and performances today? The Majestic is now host to the Broadway Across America Link in San Antonio. Patrons can now watch famous musicals such as Les Miserables, Cats, Miss Saigon, Cabaret, as well as Ragtime. Customers can also enjoy a host of international artists such as Itzhak Pearlman and Isaac Stern.

Musical artists who have performed at the venue include Sting, BB King, Tony Bennett and Lyle Lovett – to name a few. If you’re looking at visiting the Majestic for a comedy performance or two, then know that comedic legends such as Chris Rock, Jerry Seinfeld and George Lopez have performed at the theater in the past.
